History isn’t just a thing of the past in Schenectady County

Schenectady’s heritage lives on in our neighborhoods and in our architecture and when you take a walk or go for a ride in the country you won’t just see the past – you’ll feel it.

Schenectady is one of the oldest cities in the United States, founded by Dutch settlers who purchased from the Mohawk Indians a parcel of land at the confluence of the Mohawk River and Binne Kill. Schenectady has always attracted explorers and entrepreneurs: in 1642, Arendt Van Curler toured the Mohawk River Valley and envisioned a settlement that would become Schenectady. Some 200 years later, in 1886, Thomas A. Edison moved his Edison Machine Works to Schenectady.

Today, Schenectady County is a true melting pot and home to people of different ethnic and cultural backgrounds who take pride in their neighborhoods and in the history of their area. The county’s eight municipalities – Delanson, Duanesburg, Glenville, Niskayuna, Princetown, Rotterdam, Scotia and Schenectady – all contribute to its richness and diversity.
